from the Lincoln High School Course Selection Handbook...
WLHS - Multimedia (0.5 credit), Length of
Course: 1 year, Grade level: 9-12, prerequisites: instructor's approval
In this class, students create, produce, and
broadcast various forms of video, television, and audio programs using a variety
of equipment and technology. WLHS provides video services for the Lincoln
Consolidated School District. Class requirements include active
participation in the recording of both in-school and after-school events and
activities including plays, concerts, sports, special programs, commencement,
etc. Because participation in these activities is a large part of the
grade for the course, it is expected that students are available and have
transportation for these activities. Students must apply for an interview
with the instructor before gaining their written approval to enroll in this
course. This course meets half of the Michigan Merit Curriculum
requirement for Visual, Performing, and Applied Arts requirement.
(See p. 35 for additional technology
and design [pre-engineering] electives)
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are
interested in taking the WLHS Multimedia course, you must have a
conference with Mr. Kipp and Mr. Bargardi to discuss getting approval,
otherwise you will not be admitted. Also, this class will not be a good
fit for you and you will not be able to earn adequate credit in the course if
you are absent from school often, do not have adequate evening transportation to
and from school, or have too many other after-school commitments.

WLHS Crew Expectations
The filming crew is responsible
for behaving professionally while filming the public event that will be produced
into a sell-able DVD. The DVD is sold to the public and it is the only way the
program makes money to cover costs, expenses, repair of equipment, etc.
There is also a bit of face-to-face interaction with the public at this event,
whether it be for answering questions or selling our products. Therefore,
the WLHS crew must put their best face forward and maintain a respectful
reputation while working in the public eye.
Given the "real-world" nature of
the crew's responsibilities, the WLHS team is dedicated to professionalism and
efficiency; anything less is unacceptable. Therefore, it is essential that
the following expectations are adhered to. Failure to follow these
expectations can result in dismissal and failure of the program.
- If you are scheduled to work
at an event that is to be filmed, that means that you’ve signed up yourself
for that event. You are responsible for knowing what events you are
scheduled to work, what time you need to arrive, and what time you can be
expected to be dismissed at the end of the event.
- The assigned crew needs to
be at the meeting spot for the event no less than 1 hour prior to event
start time (unless otherwise instructed). Once you arrive at the meeting spot, you need to stay until
further instruction, regardless of whether or not anyone else is there.
Hint, stay where the cameras are, don't leave the area to look for anyone,
because you'll risk not being "found", therefore considered late/lost.
Typical start times for common events: theater/drama & choir events (arrive
no later than 6pm in the HS Auditorium), band concerts (arrive no later than
6pm in the HS Auditorium), Fall Football Game Half-Time Shows (arrive no
later than 7pm at the varsity football field entrance).
- Every minute you are late,
you will lose one (1) point from your grade. For every minute you are
late after the first fifteen (15) minutes, you will lose two (2) points per
minute.
- If you leave an event early,
you will lose two (2) points per minute until dismissal time.
- If you do not show up to an
event you are scheduled to work, you will forfeit all points and they must
be made up for a maximum of no more than half the original points. Absence
from scheduled events can exclude you from enrollment in following semesters
of the class.
- You are expected to wear all
black, quiet clothing to events. If you are unable to wear black, you are
expected to wear the darkest clothing possible. (This is a professional
standard in the film industry.)
- Professional conduct is
expected during the entire event. If you are unprofessional,
disorderly, loud or
disruptive, profane, etc. you will most likely be dismissal from the event
and forfeit all points.
All school rules apply at all times at all events.
- If you film an event, you
are also expected to edit the event and have it complete within two (2)
weeks from the event.
- Students selected to
participate in the WLHS program are expected to not only attend the class
during the school day, but also attend events that take place after school.
These events often last several hours and may start as late as 6pm. The
class is an extra-curricular activity that requires time both during the
school day and after (much like students that participate in choir, band,
drama, etc.). There is typically no homework required for this class, but
staying after to work is a requirement.
- Be prepared for after-school
events. This may entail bringing food in case you get hungry as well as
appropriate clothing depending on weather, heating, etc. For football
games, be prepared for cold, wind, and possible rain. Also, be
prepared to stand for long periods of time, especially if you are assigned
to operate one of the cameras. Comfortable shoes and clothing that
don't make any noise are very important. Bring a snack that is easy to
carry and won't make noise.
- Misuse, misplacement, and/or
damage to equipment will not only result in loss of points, but also
dismissal from the program and fines to repair/replace equipment. All
equipment (including laminate passes) must be checked-in prior to dismissal
from event, otherwise points will be deducted.
- Cell phones must be silenced
and should not be out while on the job. This goes for any other
personal electronic device, also. If there is an emergency in which
you need to contact someone for important reasons, ask permission first and
you will be excused to make a private call away from the event and cameras
that are recording.
- Crew members responsible for
the merchandise table are held accountable for all sales, money, exchanges,
etc. that take place during the event. You must remain at the table
and safeguard the money and forms. You must also accurately record all
transactions in the appropriate forms. All forms must be properly
filled out and all moneys accounted for prior to dismissal from the event.
You will be responsible for replacing any lost, stolen, or missing money or
merchandise.
If crew members adhere to these
expectations and are 100%
professional, reliable, competent, etc., then they will earn 100% of their grade. Any behavior or performance less than 100% will be
reflected in their grade percentage.

Proper Labelling of Recorded Media
For
every tape, DVD, CD, etc.
The
following must be clearly printed on each item
(this includes the tape or DVD as well as it’s accompanying case):
-
Full title of event, preceded by category (ie: band, choir, football,
theater, parade, etc.)
-
Full date of event (month/day/year)
-
Full Name of Person that did the recording (first and last name)
-
Camera Position (for example: stage right, sidelines, stands, back of house,
etc.) or, a short description of the subject shot (example: view of

It must

what’s on it without even watching it.
Each

Example:
-

Be sure
this info is written on the case (on the included “jacket”) as well as the
stickers that apply directly to the tape or
DVD
itself. Both parts must include all this information.
