District Sight Words
Listed below are the recommended sight words for each grade level
Working With Sight Words
It is important that a young reader develop a store of sight words (words
that are recognized immediately). The larger the store of sight
words a child has, the more rapidly and fluently he or she can read.
The sight word must be “told” to the child. A parent/guardian should
“show” the child the printed word. The child must “look” at the
printed word when it is said. The parent/guardian should “use” the
word in a sentence.
- Other activities to build on your child’s sight word vocabulary:
- Point to the letters and name the letters in the sight word.
- Put the sight words on flashcards.
- Find the sight words in newspapers, magazines or books. Have
children circle the word, use a highlighter or cut the word out and
make their own list.
- Have your child: Say it! Write it! Cover it!
Say it! And write it again!
